Ruth Bekele is an Ethiopian model no stranger to the runway, but stepping onto the stage of the 12th edition of Miss Europe Continental marks a new chapter in her journey. With international experience, an optimistic outlook, and deep roots in her heritage, Ruth embodies the strength and elegance of Ethiopian women.
Her story is one of courage, passion, and cultural pride.
Hello! I am Ruth Bekele, and I am proud to represent my Ethiopia, the land of origin.
I worked in marketing management for nearly three years before becoming a full-time model. In my spare time, I love to explore fashion, meet new people, read novels, watch films, and travel to experience traditional clothes, foods, dances, and unique architecture.
- Ruth, welcome! First of all, how does it feel to represent Ethiopia on such an international stage like Miss Europe Continental?
To represent Ethiopia at such an international level is an incredible honour. Sharing our rich history, traditions, spirit and the strength of Ethiopian women with the world brings me great pride. This opportunity is much more than just me; it is about representing my country and showing the world who we are, our culture, spirit, and strength. - You’re already a professional model with many runway shows and fashion events behind you. How did your modeling journey begin?
People encouraged me to start modelling at first, but as I became more involved, I realised how much I enjoy it. It’s become a way for me to express myself, challenge myself, and celebrate creativity and beauty. I progressively gained more opportunities and experience with dedication, diligence, and the help of my colleagues, which brought me to bigger spots and international events. It has been a phenomenal experience of learning, developing, and pursuing my dreams.
- How would you describe your personality in three words?
I would characterise myself as friendly because I enjoy talking with people and putting them at ease, resilient because I don’t give up easily, and optimistic because I always look for the positive aspects of life. - You’ve worked with various photographers and brands. Is there a particular project or moment in your modeling career that you’re especially proud of?
Every work has been special, but one moment I’m especially proud of was being one of the ten Ethiopian models selected to walk at the GTCO Fashion Weekend in 2022. Even though attending a big fashion show was challenging, it helped me grow and gave me greater self-confidence in my modelling career.
- If you could showcase one cultural aspect of Ethiopia to the world, what would it be and why?
If I had the opportunity to display one cultural aspect of Ethiopia, it would be our traditional clothing and textiles. Our history and identity are reflected in the handmade items with so much detail, color, and meaning. The world is able to see Ethiopia’s beauty, creativity, and pride through them. - You travel, but you’re also deeply connected to your roots. How do your Ethiopian origins influence who you are today?
Being Ethiopian has a significant impact on my identity. The love and strong sense of community in my family has helped define who I am today in my beliefs and social interactions. Despite my international travels and experiences, concepts remain a source of inspiration, guidance, and a reminder of my origins. - From fashion shows to cultural events – you seem to be immersed in a world of creativity. What do fashion and culture mean to you? In my opinion, fashion and culture are deeply connected. Fashion is a means of expressing my creativity and individuality, but culture is what keeps me grounded in my roots and identity. Together, they tell stories, inspire me, and give me a platform to celebrate beauty, heritage, and self-expression.
- Your Instagram bio says: “Just risk everything. There is no point in living a life if you don’t try things!” – Can you tell us more about what that quote means to you personally? I wouldn’t get a true taste of life if I didn’t try new things. I believe that taking chances and stepping outside of my comfort zone will help me become the best version of myself.
- What do you hope people will see or feel when they see you on the Miss Europe Continental stage?
My hope is for people to witness the beauty within me, my awareness, and my confidence, and realise the extent to which I am willing to go to achieve my goals and to connect them to my country through my actions on stage. - As someone who’s already experienced the modeling world, what advice would you give to young girls who dream of walking the runway? I’d advise young girls to have faith in themselves. Each task is unique, but they must remain committed and never be afraid of trying new things. Modelling requires hard work, self-confidence, and an embrace of what makes you unique. Never stop learning, be patient, and remember that every experience is an opportunity to improve.
- Lastly, what’s one dream you still want to achieve – either in your modeling career or your personal life?
One of my dreams that I still want to achieve is to be an international model and walk on some of the biggest runways in the world. In my personal life, I aim to use my platform to motivate young girls to believe in themselves and follow their dreams without fear. I have a dream of having a family one day, where I can pass my confidence and values to my children.
